Putnam County hosted a Veterans Appreciation Day at 2 pm, Sunday, November 8, 2009 at the courthouse in Winfield. The Winfield Generals Band presented an outstanding performance, which included a narrated reading from a Farewell Speech made by General Douglas MacArthur to the Corps of Cadets at West Point on May 12, 1962. County Commissioner Joe Haynes opened the appreciation ceremony and spoke elegantly about being a veteran.

My Cup Has Run Over
Anonymous
I've never made a fortune
and it's probably too late now.
But I don't worry about that much,
I'm happy anyhow.

And as I go along life's way,
I'm reaping better than I sowed.
I'm drinking from my saucer,
'Cause my cup has overflowed.

Haven't got a lot of riches,
and sometimes the going's tough.
But I've got loving ones around me,
and that makes me rich enough

I thank God for his blessings,
and the mercies He's bestowed.
I'm drinking from my saucer,
'cause my cup has overflowed.

O, Remember times when things went wrong,
My faith wore somewhat thin.
But all at once the dark clouds broke,
and sun peeped through again.

So Lord, help me not to gripe
about the tough rows that I've hoed.
I'm drinking from my saucer,
"Cause my cup has overflowed.

If God gives me strength and courage,
When the way grows steep and rough.
I'll not ask for other blessings,
I'm already blessed enough.

And may I never be too busy,
to help others bear their loads.
Then I'll keep drinking from my saucer,
"Cause my cup has overflowed.

There was a flyover by the 130th Airlift Wing's C-130 Hercules. The United States Air Force's 130th Airlift Wing is an airlift unit located at Yeager Airport in Charleston, West Virginia. For more information on the C-130 and the 130th Airlift Wing click here.

Local veterans were honored as each branch of the military was announced and those who are serving or have served came forward to be recognized. They were presented with a pin as a "Thank You" for having given of themselves in service to this country.

Hershel "Woody" Williams, Medal of Honor recipient was the keynote speaker. We were moved by the story of his service to our great country. I listened, with tears in my eyes, as he read a poem during his speech about "drinking from my saucer”. You can read the poem at right. If you would like to learn more about, Mr. Williams and his dedicated military service click here.

There was also a flag folding demonstration and as each fold was made, we were told what it represents. We have included a link here to the military flag folding ceremony.
